What do witches dream for?

„If witching dreams are really about closing my eyes and imagining things just to feel them once more, they still make me sad“, I tell my witch. „A minute of escape, but no real relief. But if they are all about pleading with the universe and convincing it to bend the rules, then witching dreams are just for those that happened to have been lucky in the end, and not for those that fight to survive from moment to moment.“

After all this time, ice cream at 4 AM was the oldest habit Layla and I still had left.

„So?“, she asks.
„What do witches dream for?“, I respond.

She giggles and roles her eyes. „Last night, I dreamed for falling asleep on top of HIM once more … I dreamed about it!“ Then she tries to be serious. „We dream for all of these things. For closing the eyes and feeling things once more, and also to trick the universe into giving things back it stole from us.“

Those words are still disturbing to me.

„I think it is unfair to talk about witching dreams while already belonging to those that might not get one of the most tragic endings of them all.“
My witch raises an eyebrow. „So, you already accepted a happy ending for yourself?“
„Not yet.“ I swallow too much ice cream at once.
„But once you find your tone to scream at the world, it responds in the right way.“
„Not yet.“

The thought of having to be happy again one day already upsets me.
