“Is it safe to sleep tonight?”

Is it safe to sleep at night?
My eyes are so heavy.
My thoughts blur away.
I need to rest,
But what if the shadows grow over my head?

Is it safe to sleep at night?
Who will come,
If I turn off the lights?
I hear them in the distance,
From the back of my head.

I hear a whisper,
Waiting in the shadows
Like words from the past
Touching my skin
They leave behind marks
That can never be seen
But show in the dark
And only survive
In the most secret corner
Of my messy head.

Is it safe to sleep at night?
I want to rest,
But feel the sun on my skin,
Begg her to hide
All my secrets away.

Even if it’s safe to sleep at night,
My eyes are wide open,
My lungs always full,
My muscles are trembling,
Always ready to run.
