Witches and needles belong together, remember? So, I think it’s time to show my favourite thing to use them for! Are you curious?
Needles were so often used to prove the evil hiding inside a housewife having used her tools to patch some socks, to fix a shirt, and most-importantly of course, to work forbidden spells and summon demons into our world!
There are a lot of old spells and rituals that actually require needles to work them. A few summon introductions in “Salomon’s key”, an occult classic, are a good example. In late medieval Europe, voodoo also happened to be used in some personal conflicts between politically meaningful figures – so, these little things matter to witches!
The thing I like to do with them is making flowers.
I have searched for a hobby to allow me to create things I can hold in my hands for a very long time. I am not the most patient person, and whenever I tried knitting, or sewing or drawing, I was not successful. My hope for colorful knitwear has stopped me from giving up on knitting completely so far, but all my results have been sad.
The one thing I managed to work with was felt. Colorful felt, to be sculptured with needles is a thing I have become really good at. Forming a flower, a water melon, or even a cat out of it has a lot do with sculpturing it the right way, but also feels more similar to painting than drawing. It is a soft and dynamic process.
It’s what I especially enjoy in dark winter weeks. I like to craft my little witching garden out of felt, and have flowers grow in winter that will last forever!
So, in memory of all the women with needles and all the funny spells these little companions can hold for us witches, I will give you the introduction to a needle felted witching flower in this post!
First of all, you do need special needles to work felt. They are shaped in a way to knot the felt with everytime you stitch into it. I like to use the bigger, rougher ones.
I start with the middle of the flower. For that, we make a little ball in the right color.
The felt used for this should be straight and easy to form.
I start the ball with a knot, and then put the long ends around the knot and stitch with the needle into it.
This takes a few minutes and can be done from every corner.
Now and then, I roll the little ball between my hands, and then fix the form with the needle afterwards, until it is round enough..
For the petal, I use another color, and also look for a straight and even piece of felt.
I fold it, until the shape is right, and fixate the form while stitching with the needle into it. This needs to be done from both sides.
Until the form is fixed!
I like to repeat the process with a much smaller amount of felt in a matching color, to make the flower more unique!

This, we have to do six times! It is not too bad if they all look different and differ a bit in shape and size. That can still be fixed.
With one ball and six petals, the flower can be put together!
Each petal is put onto the ball from behind, through stitches of the needle. How far they reach out can be decided with each one in the process.
Once all six petals are fix, the flower is done!
Of all the things witches do with needles, this one is probably the least worrisome, so I hope you enjoyed this little post!
