My favourite coffee places in Budapest

After living and working in Budapest for a little while, there are so many things to write and think about. There were places full of history as I have not seen and felt it before, beautiful moments to capture and have a coffee in and so much more! The little witch in the back of my head has been suspiciously quiet for all this time, still trying to sort out her head. I have heard she also had a lover with this strange and wonderful mother tongue. So I‘ve heard …

To sort out my head again, I want to start with something simple and yet personal. I want to start with places my witch enjoyed just as much as I did, where she even sometimes began to speak and giggle a little bit!

This is a list of my favorite cafes in Budapest!

Finding all of these unique places without any intend is something I deeply love this city for. It inspired me to go searching in the place where I live. I wanted to keep this magic alive! Although that was not as successful, I still love the inspiration it gave me and it lead to long poetry writing sessions in not as beautiful cafes around here.

These are places I wish to sit in every week to think about the stories I would like to tell!

1. Orient Café

Entrance of the Orient Café

Right next to „Keleti pályaudvar“, the great eastern train station where most long distance trains arrive and take off, this little coffee place is almost hiding in all the rush of people and the other places around. It may take a second glimpse to find the arched entrance, but once you enter, it‘s like entering another world.

The interior looks playful and almost like a fairytale, with the potted plants and fairy lights. This atmosphere is supported by alternative music, which may be a bit too loud at times for some visitors.

I enjoyed sitting upstairs, sometimes with friends and sometimes alone, and I am soon going to publish a poem I wrote there.

Another good thing about this place is the „Iced salted caramel latte“, which actually tastes salty and sweet, as well as staff that is fluent in English.

I can‘t wait to go back one day.

2. Müterem Kávézó

This comfortable place is not as close to the city center and therefor more often visited by locals. Deeper within an interesting residential area, it is a special place to rest at for a few minutes after taking a nice walk.

I could have spent ours there, sitting on one of those tiny, colorful tables and having an Iced Latte in the sun.

3. Madal – Espresso and Brew bar

And we‘re back into the heart of the city! This place is close to the Metro station „Ferenciek tér“ and I came across it when walking home from the „Petöfi Museum“, which I also recommend.
Sitting there in the rushing city, between elegant and very old buildings felt very elegant and inspiring!

4. Piknikség

A bagle, my hand and my camera in front of a window showing keleit

And we are back to Keleti! It‘s a wonderful place to be and arrive, and when I explored the city, it always was like a safe haven that ensured me not to get lost completely. Right across, and actually right next to the Orient Cafe, is another one that I would recommend if you wish to try more traditional Hungarian pastry – this one is offering lots of puff pastry. Not only, since I chose a bagle, as you can see, but still!

You can enjoy whatever you pick while looking at the beautiful old train station that just invited to travel into the next adventure.

5. Piazza di Francesco Kávéház-Cukrászda-Bisztró

This one I loved for the little cushion on the lower window sill!
It is also to be found more in an residential area and therefor not crowded with tourists. I rested there after visiting the Natural history museum, from where it is not far. The Iced Latte as well as the freshly made lemonade was very needed that day (although I did not sit down on one of those cute little cushions).

These were my favourite places so far, and I am very sure that I can find much more places each time I return, which will be many, many times, since I lost a peace of my heart in this city, as it seems. It definitely made me tell more hopeful stories than ever before.
