The glitter from the last lonely wine night two days ago still visible, but the mass of pizzas I had ordered in thought of company finally eaten, I said to my witch: „Layla, give me a dream that can break this world.“
After all, that was what witches had burned for.
Actually, to accuse a witch, three things had to be proven.
To become a witch, one had to bond with a demon, had to fly off into the mountains and attend a party with the devil and other witches, and damage had to be done to the physical world.
„That is very easy“, Layla said, while combing her long hair in front of the mirror. „Just think of something that makes you melt.“
„Melt?“
My witch giggled. „Something that is not here right now, but would make your knees give in.“
And there we were again.
„Is that really the only thing that made you a witch?“, I asked. „Surviving a terrible disaster, and daydreaming of people lost?“
Layla smiled sadly. „You know, this means more than you think.“ Her hand reached out for me and she pulled me right next to her, facing the mirror. „The one up there watching his little world is mainly interested in our soul, and whether it is still good. On our way, there are angels to reason with us and give advise. But careful.“ She pulled my hair out of the ponytail, curled a strain around her finger, and finally let go to touch my cheek. „There are also demons to trick you in helping them accomplish evil things. And if they succeed, you may dream of things not allowed with Daddy watching.“
Her hand wandered down to my neck and I took a deep breath to speak without giving away the intensity of Layla‘s touch on my skin. „But where is the damage to the world in this?“
My witch giggled once more. „There are forbidden daydreams so intense, they transform the body. They make your skin turn red and warm. They make the body expand, or open up. They change the very substance of the blood running through your veins, within seconds of joy.“
I could not hide my shivering anymore, and Layla put her arms around my shoulders and sighed deeply. „And once you allowed your will to commit to such an affect of your body, it threatens all the physical world to change, and even all the stars in the sky not to orbit our little planet anymore.“
So, this was how witches dreamed themselves into oblivion.
„Layla, who taught you this?“
She buried her head on my shoulder.
„No one. But the boy that I am missing ever since has once explained to me why my old life had wanted me dead.“
I wish I’d told you all my stories.
I want to tell you all my storiesIt’s not that they would changeIt’s just that I would likeTo see themFormA new expressionOn your face I need to tell you all my storiesI am not sureIf they makeSenseThe way I thoughtThey do. I will tell you all my storiesThey frighten meI’m sure you won’t endureI see…
Dealing with darkness in writing
This spring afternoon is glowing pink and tastes like strong tea. It feels much too familiar, and I begin to open up.I feel far away from myself as I start to talk, to babble on about my novel. About all the things I’ve been reading about in the past 5 years. About the 17th century,…
Radical witching novel rewrites at 4 AM!
I wore the same night dress my witch used to wear to get drunk on my windowsill, when I suddenly had an idea at 4 AM. Great ideas always happen at 4 AM, remember? This one however, kept me awake for at least a week, debating it back and forth. At some point my witch…
