A writer’s nightmare come true

I’ve experienced the writer’s nightmare today!

A few days ago a short story contest I had participated in announced their winners. Anxiously, I checked the list but did not find my name. That can happen. I have more material to send out now. An infection retold from the late-medieval understanding of demonic obsession is unique, right?! It happened before. Let’s move on.

That was what I told myself, and what my witch and I had a tea over.

Then, to my surprise, I received an E-Mail that I did win after all! In an additional message, I received feedback, which mostly made me very happy, despite a few points of criticism I’ll have to consider in the future. They liked my historical narrative and my voice!

I was jumping up and down at this point. My cats eying me skeptically, my witch stealing my last bit of chocolate. Magic is real! I’m published again!

However, a third message within 2 minutes notified me of a mistake. I had very narrowly not made it to publication.

I still feel that roller coaster ride deep within me hours later. When my work had been accepted for publishing in the past, I had always feared this ‘mistake’ to catch up with me.

I thanked them for their effort, sat back down, and had another cup of tea with my witch. At least I have more material to send out now. It happened before, it will happen again. Let’s move on.
